Allspice: The Caribbean Wonder Spice
One Spice, Three Flavors
Allspice earned its name because early English explorers thought it combined the flavors of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. In reality, it's a single berry from the Pimenta dioica tree, native to Jamaica and Central America.
Flavor Profile
Warm, sweet, and slightly peppery with notes of clove and cinnamon. The dominant compound is eugenol (also found in cloves), which gives it its distinctive aroma.
