Saffron: How to Spot Real vs Fake
Why Fake Saffron Is Common
Saffron is the world's most expensive spice at $5,000-$10,000 per kilogram. This price gap creates a huge incentive for fraud.
Test 1: The Water Test
Drop threads in warm water. Real saffron slowly releases a golden-yellow color over 10-15 minutes. Fake saffron turns water red immediately.
Test 2: The Smell Test
Real saffron smells like honey and hay simultaneously. Fake versions smell like nothing or have a chemical odor.
Test 3: The Taste Test
Real saffron tastes slightly bitter, not sweet. If it tastes sweet, it's likely been coated with sugar or honey to add weight.
Test 4: The Baking Soda Test
Mix saffron with baking soda and water. Real saffron turns yellow; fake saffron turns red or pink due to artificial dyes.
