Smoked Paprika Types and Best Uses
Three Varieties Explained
Spanish smoked paprika (pimenton) comes in three heat levels: dulce (sweet), agridulce (bittersweet), and picante (hot). All are made from peppers slow-smoked over oak wood for two weeks.
Dulce (Sweet)
Mild and fruity with a deep smoky backbone. Use in paella, roasted vegetables, and aioli. This is the most versatile variety and a great starting point.
Agridulce (Bittersweet)
A complex middle ground with tangy, slightly bitter notes. Pairs beautifully with chorizo, stews, and tomato-based sauces. Try it sprinkled over deviled eggs.
Picante (Hot)
Brings genuine heat alongside the smoke. Perfect for chili, BBQ rubs, and grilled meats. Use sparingly as it can overwhelm delicate dishes.
