Herbes de Provence: French Classic Blend
The Classic Blend
Herbes de Provence captures the sun-drenched aromas of southern France. The traditional mix combines savory, thyme, rosemary, marjoram, and oregano. Some versions include lavender, which is actually a modern addition popularized in the 1970s.
Authentic Recipe
- 2 tablespoons dried savory
- 2 tablespoons dried thyme
- 1 tablespoon dried rosemary, crushed
- 1 tablespoon dried marjoram
- 1 tablespoon dried oregano
- Optional: 1 teaspoon dried lavender buds
Combine all herbs and crumble between your fingers to release oils. Store in a sealed jar away from light.
Best Culinary Uses
Roasting
Rub generously over chicken, lamb, or vegetables before roasting. The herbs form a fragrant crust during cooking.
Grilling
Sprinkle on fish or add to olive oil for a basting brush. The high heat intensifies the herbal notes.
Stews and Soups
Add a tablespoon to ratatouille, bouillabaisse, or any Mediterranean-style braise at the start of cooking.
